Call to be made to reinstate Blue Flag at Garretstown

A call is to be made to restore the Blue Flag status of Garretstown Beach.

The Echo report that the issue will be raised at tonight’s meeting of Cork County Council.

An Taisce confirmed that the beach was one of four in Munster to lose its blue flag status last week.

It’s believed that Garretstown has passed on 32 of the 33 criteria for a Blue Flag – failing only because of a lack of recycling bins at the beach.

It’s thought the bins will be in place soon, and that an Taisce will then be called on to reinstate Garretstown’s Blue Flag..

Cork was named as the county with the most awarded sites for best beaches and marinas in the country.

The county has secured 27 awards in all including 10 Blue Flag beaches, 2 Blue Flag marinas and 15 Green Coast Awarded sites.
