Calls for car registrations to be printed on drive-thru food packaging
A Fine Gael senator wants to see QR codes or car registration numbers printed on Drive-Thru food packaging, to trace where illegally dumped litter comes from.
The party’s spokesperson on Climate is TD Alan Farrell – he’s said the majority of rubbish disposed of on roadsides comes from takeaway outlets.
Fast food giant McDonalds say the proposal presents a data protection issue.
However, Senator John McGahon doesn’t think there is a privacy problem.
“GDPR is just a handy excuse for any large company to hide behind when they don’t want to hide behind something that could be difficult.
“They claim it’s personal data, yet every McDonald’s Drive-thru in the country has CCTV.
“I can walk outside my front door here in Dundalk and see 25 car registration plates – I don’t think car registration plates are private data.
“I would have absolutely no issue with my car registration plate being printed on my McDonald’s take away.”
