Catholic Bishop From Cork Shot Dead In California

A Catholic bishop from Cork has been shot dead in California.
David O’Connell had served as a priest and later an auxiliary bishop in Los Angeles for 45 years.
Police responded to a shooting in the suburb of Hacienda Heights at about 1 o’clock yesterday afternoon, and Bishop O’Connell was pronounced dead at the scene.
Tributes have been paid in California, including by the local archbishop who described Bishop O’Connell as “a peacemaker”, and asked for prayers for his family in Ireland.
