Catriona Twomey to address public meeting on housing needs

Catriona Twomey from Cork Penny Dinners is among the speakers who will address a public meeting on housing needs in the city tonight.

The Government’s decision to lift the eviction ban is expected to be among the topics that will strongly feature at tonight’s meeting.

The meeting is being hosted by Socialist Party TD Mick Barry and will also hear from Frank O’Connor of Derelict Ireland.

There are 700 derelict buildings within 2 square kilometres of the city and the Government has been accused of failing to take any action on vacancy and dereliction in the height of an accommodation crisis.

Figures from the Residential Tenancies Board released today show 500 Notices to Quit were issued to tenants across Cork between July and October last year while Department of Housing figures for January show that 529 adults in Cork were accessing emergency accommodation that month.

Cork Simon says that figure will only rise if tenants aren’t protected from eviction.
