Chairperson Of Cork Cycling Campaign Says New Regulations On Illegal Parking Are “A Positive Step In The Right Direction”

The Chairperson of the Cork Cycling Campaign says new regulations on illegal parking are “a positive step in the right direction”.

The new regulations will come into effect on the 1st February, and will double the fixed charge penalty for drivers who illegally park on on footpaths, cycle lanes and bus lanes from 40 euro to 80 euro.

The Minister for Transport, Eamon Ryan said the increased penalties would encourage more considerate use of road space.

Speaking to RedFM News, Chairperson of the Cork Cycling Campaign, Conn Donovan says that illegal parking can cause “an accident or an injury”:

“It’s a positive step in the right direction. I think was long overdue. The €40 fine had been in place since 2004. So, make case that it should have been increased many years ago. It should be a deterrent for people to park in places where they can cause a hazard to people who are walking, cycling or taking the bus. But the real issue here is enforcement. So if the enforcement doesn’t come with the increased fine, it will all be in vain. A car that’s parked illegally -it hasn’t paid, that’s a loss of revenue for the City Council. But a car that’s parked illegally, in a dangerous place could cause an accident or an injury for someone.”
