Consumer expert says cash will always have a part to play in Ireland

Cash will always have a part to play in Irish society, according to a consumer expert.

That’s despite new data from the Banking and Payments Federation, which shows the number of contactless payments rose by 53% compared to last year.

There were 2-and-a-half million contactless payments in the first quarter of this year.

With suggestions of a move closer to a cashless society, Dermott Jewell from the Consumers Association of Ireland has warned many people still rely on cash every day:

“They’re paid in cash still believe it or not, they may receive an allowance, they may find an element of cash payment given to them on a regular basis, they may be using cash from savings while they were unemployed or working from home. It also impacts fairly significantly on charities.”
