Cork city will be car free this Saturday
It follows research which shows that 29% of greenhouse gas emissions in the city are created by road transport.
A number of city centre streets will be closed to traffic, however the quays will remain open and buses and taxis will still be able to access the closed streets as normal
Co-ordinator of the Cork Transport and Mobility Forum Dr Darren McAdam O’Connell told RedFM News that developing communities around the car is a mistake:
“We need to make sure that when we build new housing, new businesses, they’re in places that are designed to be walked to, to be cycled to, to be accessed by public transport, rather than places surrounded by a moat of car parking because if we build it that way, people are forced to drive. We want people to have the choice and the option to be able to walk cycle or use public transport”
