Cork Hotelier: Each Individual Hotel Must Decide If They Will Renew Contracts Offering Accommodation To Refugees

A Cork hotelier says it will have to be up to each individual hotel to decide if their will renew their state contract offering accommodation to refugees.

The chairperson of the Irish Hotels Federation’s Cork Branch, Joe Kennedy, runs the Maldron Hotel in Shandon.

He was talking as many accommodation contracts between hotels and the state are set to expire in February and March.

Speaking to RedFM News, Joe Kennedy says hotels are not a suitable long-term solution:

“It’s very hard to see where that’s going to go. It is an emergency situation. And the hotel industry has stepped up to provide accommodation. It’s really for each individual hotel to assess their own situation on that. And I hope that the government can also step in to come up with some other form of accommodation long-term because a hotel room is not the ideal accommodation for the Ukraine refugees. I’m very sensitive to that conversation because they’re hearing about it and that’s really not nice for them”.
