Cork Penny Dinners say that older people are afraid of the bills coming in their door

Cork Penny Dinners say that older people are afraid of the bills coming in their door.

Caitriona Twomey who volunteers for the charity says that people over the age of 65 are coming to them with worries about paying their rent and bills.

A new report from ALONE and Threshold showed 1 in 4 older renters believe they’ll be renting for the rest of their lives with many saying that they don’t believe that an alternative option other than renting is available to them.

The charity say that pensions need to be increased for people over the age of 65 and are calling on the government to reduce the cost of living so that older people can stop living in fear.

Speaking to RedFM News, Caitriona Twomey from Cork Penny Dinners says the older generation are suffering:

“We have older people that come down to us that are simply afraid. At the minute they’re afraid that their bills they’re afraid that their mortgages they’re afraid of their rent. They’re afraid of everything. So they don’t know what to do so naturally for them, they won’t feed themselves. They can’t feed themselves because they’re afraid they won’t have enough to pay everything else. So if you can pay everything there’s something wrong.”
