Cork TD says he fears “tsunami of homelessness” will hit Cork in the coming months

Sinn Féin Deputy Thomas Gould was speaking after figures from the Residential Tenancies Board, showed 500 eviction notices were issued to renters in the city and county in the third quarter of last year.

Over 4,700 eviction notices were issued nationally between July and October and it’s believed the evictions will impact around 10,000 people.

Speaking to RedFM News, Thomas Gould says the level of homelessness in Cork could potentially almost double and says he disagrees with the Government’s reasons for not extending the ban:

“They think allowing evictions from the first of April will keep landlords in the market- it won’t. The main reason landlords are selling is that house prices are at an all time high. And if you bought a property during the financial crisis, they’re selling it now so that they are making the maximum profit. For the Taoiseach to say that this will keep landlords in the market- he’s completely wrong.”
