Cork TD says removal of free school meals will severely impact families
A Cork TD says that the removal of free meals from schools across the county will severely impact families.
His comments come after St. Maries of the Isle Primary School on Bishop Street recently lost the provider of it’s school meal programme.
Donnchadh O’Laoghaire raised the issue in the Dáil on Tuesday, saying there are underlying issues with the school meals model that must be addressed.
In September, a €20 million year on year increase was announced for the scheme as part of Budget 2023
Speaking to RedFM News, Donnchadh O’Laoghaire expressed his concern for vulnerable students in the school:
“Many students among the most vulnerable in relation to the school in Cork, we know they’re going there from homeless shelters from Edel House or Redcliff. So, it’s vitally important for the children that they get these meals, we cannot have all this be one of the things that slips. Surely this must be among the highest priorities.”
