Coveney – Russian military exercises off Irish coast not wanted

The Foreign Affairs Minister says Russian military exercises in Ireland’s exclusive economic zone are “not wanted”, and he’s made that clear to the Russian ambassador.

Simon Coveney is briefing EU colleagues on the issue in Brussels today.

It comes amid rising tensions over a potential invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

Minister Coveney says Ireland can’t stop Russia carrying out the exercises 240 kilometres off the coast.

“That is in international waters, but it is also part of the exclusive economic zone of Ireland.

“We don’t have a power to prevent this happening, but certainly I’ve made it clear to the Russian ambassador in Ireland that it is not welcome.

“This is not a time to increase military activity and tension.”
