Coveney says they can’t ignore the science as Covid concerns grow ahead of restriction easing
The Government wants to press ahead with easing most restrictions on October the 22nd but they can’t ignore science.
That’s according to the Foreign Affairs Minister Simon Coveney who was speaking as there is a ripple of anxiety and fear among doctors over the rise in Covid cases.
The concern has thrown some doubt around Ireland’s so called Freedom Day on October 22nd.
The 14-day incidence rate has increased by 12% over the past week, while there are 390 patients in hospital with the virus.
Leading immunologist Professor Luke O’Neill says we don’t know why case numbers are increasing.
“People should keep up with our vaccination campaign, obviously.
“And then of course the booster campaign is underway, and that’s very important because there is evidence of waning, and maybe we’re seeing a bit more waning here and there.
“We don’t know why these cases are climbing all the time.”
