Cyclone Gabrielle rips across New Zealand
There’s been significant flooding following intense rain and ‘ocean swells’ in New Zealand, with some streets turning to rivers.
There have also been a few major landslides – taking out houses and roads as Cyclone Gabrielle ripped across the country.
225-thousand homes are without power, and mobile networks have been damaged.
Meanwhile people are being urged not to panic buy supplies.
New Zealand’s Prime Minister Chris Hipkins says the damage is ‘extensive’.
“Gabrielle is the most significant weather event. New Zealand has seen this century, the severity and the breadth of the damage that we are seeing has not been experienced in a generation. This morning we declared a national emergency for only the third time in our history.”
