Dell Technologies has announced its to cut 5 per cent of its workforce globally which represents 6,650 jobs.
Its not yet clear what impact the announcement will have on the 5,000 people it employs in Ireland.
This announcement comes as the Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment Simon Conveney visits the West coast of the US for a number of high-level meetings with a range of companies, including big tech firms with bases in Ireland.
Speaking ahead of his visit Mr Coveney said that despite recent layoffs, the tech sector in Ireland remains strong.
In a memo to staff, Dell’s co-Chief Operating Officer Jeff Clarke said the company is experiencing market conditions that “continue to erode with an uncertain future,”
Dell Technologies has been operating in Ireland for over 30 years with bases in Dublin, Limerick and Cork.
Last week, it was confirmed that around 200 staff at Salesforce in Ireland are to lose their jobs as part of global cost-saving measures at the company.
