Donnchadh O Laoghaire calls for support of free school meals scheme
The free school meals scheme cannot be allowed to slip as the cost of living crisis becomes more severe
That’s according to Cork TD Donnchadh O Laoghaire, who says the scheme is vitally important to vulnerable families across the county.
Raising the issue in the Dáil this week, the Sinn Féin TD spoke about a Cork primary school losing the provider of its school meal programme.
Deputy O’Laoghaire said the meals play a key role in ensuring children can learn and concentrate, and are relied upon by families who are struggling.
Speaking to RedFM News, Donnchadh O Laoghaire says the Government must re-evaluate the financial support for the scheme.
“What I’m calling on the Minister to do urgently, and what I’m calling on the Taoiseach to do, is to reevaluate what is the financial basis for the school meals programme, and make sure that suppliers are not struggling to make their orders and to make sure that no child misses out on these school needs, which is so essential to make sure they are safe and meeting their educational targets.”
