Eirgrid halts talks with data centre providers
Eirgrid is ‘right’ to halt talks with potential data centre promoters, according to the Environment Minister.
The operator of the electricity network has stopped the discussions in a bid to ease pressure on supplies.
There are around 70 data centres operating in Ireland, which are seen as vital to the technology sector.
Environment Minister Eamon Ryan thinks its the right call.
“We do have a very tight situation in terms of electricity supply.
“Data centres will be part of the future, but it has to be within the climate limits and the energy supply limits that we have.
“That means that they have to be located in a place where they support the grid, they will have to bring their own generation, they will have to be flexible in terms of how they sue demand.”
