Electric Ireland says wholesale gas prices have increased by 1,000% in 18 months.
Representatives from the energy company and the ESB were before TDs and senators earlier about the spiralling cost of energy.
Despite ESB making huge profits, it said it can't offset the price of electricity from its subsidiary Electric Ireland.
Around 125,000 customers of the company are in arrears.
