EU sanctions against Russia will be announced today, according to the German Chancellor

Olaf Scholz also confirmed he’s halting approval of the Nordstream 2 gas pipeline to Russia at a press conference with the Taoiseach.

The two leaders are meeting in Berlin this afternoon to discuss the situation in Ukraine as well as Brexit and European climate policy.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin said the EU will have to respond to Russia sending troops into breakaway regions of Ukraine:

“The announcement by President Putin yesterday that Russia was recognizing the separatists regions in Ukraine crosses a line. It is a flagrant violation of international law and a breach of Ukraine’s sovereignty. It breaches the fundamental principles of the UN Charter, under which all members must refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity or political independence of any state.”
