Fears that hospital overcrowding could reach record levels this year
Hospital overcrowding this winter could be the worst we’ve ever seen.
That’s the warning from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation after 669 patients were left without a bed on Monday.
That figure was the highest number of patients waiting on trolleys in a single day in 2022.
There was 109 people on trolleys across Cork hospitals yesterday according to the union including 82 people at CUH and 24 at the Mercy
General Secretary of the INMO, Phil Ni Sheaghdha, says the numbers have reached emergency levels:
“These numbers were considered a massive crisis in January and February of 2020 just before the pandemic hit and called, a lot of issues, and a lot of responses that needed to happen. We felt that that was the worst winter ever since then, we’ve had a pandemic, and we’re heading back into another winter that’s going to be as bad if not worse.”
