Fishermen calling on Government to intervene and stop a French military exercise off the South West coast
Fishermen are calling on government to intervene and stop a French military exercise off the Irish coast.
The missile and rocket exercise is to get underway overnight 200km southwest of the country.
It’s expected to continue over five days up to next Monday, however it could still be postponed to a later date.
The Department of Foreign Affairs says it’s in ongoing contact with French authorities over the military drill.
CEO of the Irish South and West Fish Producers Organisation, Patrick Murphy, says fishermen are unhappy the same issue’s arising again:
“There’s too many unanswered questions here, and we’re asking our own Government, who we complimented the last time for writing to the Russians to help us push back. These exercises into international waters where they could do less harm, and be less dangerous to our fishermen and our members.”
