Foreign Affairs Minister says he’s confident the EU will finalise ban on Russian oil

The Foreign Affairs Minister says he’s confident the EU will finalise a ban on Russian oil as soon as possible.

The measure is included in the sixth sanctions package – but has been opposed by some countries, including Hungary.

Simon Coveney has been meeting other foreign ministers in Brussels today, as they try to reach agreement.

He says he’s confident of a breakthrough:

“These are difficult, difficult issues for some countries, Hungary included, because of their reliance on Russian oil and gas. And so, we understand that these aren’t easy decisions. And so, that’s why the commission and others have tried to find ways in which we could manage that transition better for countries that are the most reliant on Russian oil and gas.”
