Garda Memorial Day To Be Marked At Dublin Castle This Afternoon

Garda Memorial Day will be marked at Dublin Castle this afternoon in memory of members of the force who were killed in the line of duty.

Its the first time in two years the event will be public and takes place during the Centenary Year of An Garda Síochána.

Garda Memorial Day, takes place at Dubh Linn Gardens, at Dublin Castle at noon.

The Memorial Garden honours the members of the force who gave their lives in the service of the State.

The Garda Commissioner, Minister for Justice, Garda chaplains and other representatives will pay tribute to Gardaí who passed away while in service.

Dublin Castle has been associated with An Garda Síochána since the foundation of the State. It is the location where An Garda Síochána affirmed its authority as the National Policing Force on 9th February, 1922, commencing the phasing out of the Royal Irish Constabulary which ended its policing role in August of that year.

The minister for Justice announced that events will take place in the coming months to mark the centenary of the establishment of the force.
