Gougane Barra fundraiser raises over €9,500

An online fundraiser launched to fund a judicial review into the decision to grant permission for a wind farm in Gougane Barra has raised over €9,500.

Locals say they need to raise over €95,000 in the next two weeks to bring their challenge to the High Court.

Planning for the seven turbine wind farm was refused by Cork County Council, however that decision was appealed and An Bord Pleanála gave the €30 million project the green light.

Speaking to RedFM News, owner of the Gougane Barra Hotel Neil Lucey says locals don’t think the area is suitable for the project.

“An Bord Pleanala’s own inspector went against putting the wind farm in this location as well because of its visual impact, its impact on nature, its impact on uplands, and it’s cited as being not the right location for this.

“The original planning, there was originally a small wind from there 20 years ago and originally An Bord Pleanala said that it was not suitable 20 years ago and gave the original one a 20 licence.

“The original one actually went and fire one or two of the turbines one of actually burnt side of the mountain up there.”
