Government Senator Calls For More Energy Credits Next Winter Despite Opposition From ECB

The government’s being urged to provide more energy credits next winter – despite opposition from the European Central Bank.

The ECB says EU governments should end these supports because they push up inflation.

Irish households have got 600 euro off their energy bills since December, due to State intervention.

Senator Eugene Murphy, says more support will be needed later this year:

“I think we have to keep a very, very close eye on next winter – in relation to energy costs for business, and energy costs for the domestic dweller as well – in terms of the possibility of the government having to step in again and give some support to all energy users in a hope that they will be able to maintain  their bills in some shape or form”.
