Government will consider arming more Gardai if requested to do so by the Garda Commissioner

The Justice Minister says the government will consider arming more Gardaí if requested to do so by the Garda Commissioner.

It follows remarks from Tanaiste Leo Varadkar at the weekend that he would support fully arming the force,

The comments were described as ‘a step too far’ by Garda representatives and opposition parties have criticised them.

Some coalition colleagues have also distanced themselves from the suggestion.

Justice Minister Heather Humphreys says it will only be considered if a request is made by Garda Commissioner Drew Harris:

“The request hasn’t been made, I understand the commissioner has said that that’s not something he’s planned, but say we’re happy to talk to him and of course as you know the Minister for Justice has, has a lot of contact with the commissioner, but the end of the day is we want to keep our streets safe. We want to support our Gardaí safe in the in the best way possible.”
