Higher Education Minister says spiking by needle is ‘beginning to take hold in Ireland’

It’s after the police in the UK reported “dozens” of instances of needle spiking in bars and nightclubs recently.
Yesterday the Students Union at UCC held a ‘Take Back The Spike’ demonstration at the college after a UCC student reported being spiked with a needle in Limerick in recent weeks
The young woman posted a picture on Instagram of a red puncture wound and showed the area of her arm where she appeared to have been unknowingly injected.
Gardai are investigating the report of the alleged incident in Limerick and say they have not received any reports of needle spiking in Cork.
Minister Simon Harris says an awareness campaign on needle spiking will start in the coming weeks:
“It’s very much beginning to take hold here. I’ll also be talking to my colleague, the Minister of Justice, about this in the coming days, but from my point of view, and the point of view of the Union of Students of Ireland, I know we’re very eager to run a joint awareness campaign here for students.”
