HSE appear before Oireachtas to discuss closure of Owenacurra centre in Midleton
The 24 bed, long term residential centre on the grounds of Midleton Community Hospital is due to close by the end of next month as the HSE says the building is not fit for purpose.
The committee heard excerpts from several annual reports that detailed a lack of communal space, the poor internal and external condition of the building and the presence of asbestos.
Other reports noted that the space was adequate and the building had a low risk rating.
The families of residents say they still don’t know where patients will be moved to and are calling for the service to remain open and for a new centre built on the grounds of the hospital.
HSE management say patients are continually being assessed and will be moved to appropriate centres when the facility closes
