The HSE Chief Clinical Officer says he's hopeful we are more than halfway through the current surge in Covid-19.

There are 826 people in hospital with the illness, 33 of whom were being treated in ICU.

Dr Colm Henry says the experience in Portugal with the new subvariants has been one of a decline in cases after six weeks.

He's hopeful a similar trend will occur here:

"But it's worth noting that that's surging on economy so earlier in March reached much higher numbers and the rise in cases was much steeper than what we're seeing now. So our hope is that based on experience abroad who are a few weeks ahead of us in their own experience of BA.5 and BA.5 subvariants, that we will see a plateau and a fall in cases in the coming weeks."
