Islamic Cultural Centre Of Ireland Calls On Government To Re-Think Proposals On Modernising Junior Cert. Sex Education Module

The Islamic Cultural Centre of Ireland is calling on the government to re-think proposals on modernising the sex education module in the Junior Cert.

The Department of Education is planning to add teaching on consent, sexual orientation, gender identity and pornography to the curriculum.

However, the centre says the proposals do not correlate with Muslim values.

Spokesperson Dr. Ali Selim thinks the proposals should be discussed with interested groups before becoming formal policy:

“We have different values here – a different set of values. There are a lot of commonalities. Hence if there is a proposal of the changes that we can see are of that nature, we believe that these changes are to be open for discussion among educationalist, as well as scholars”.
