Junior Transport Minister: Government Unhappy With TII’s Decision To Increase Tolls
The Junior Transport Minister says T-I-I’s decision to increase tolls is ‘bad timing’ and the government is unhappy with the decision.
The independent body announced the increase earlier this week, which could see some motorists paying up to 60 cent more for the toll from January.
Hildegarde Naughton says discussions between the government and TII about potentially scrapping the price increase ‘are the conversations that need to happen’.
Speaking at the Fine Gael Ard Fheis, Minister Naughton says the timing is not good given the cost-of-living crisis:
“From the government’s point of view, the timing of this is not good. When we’re looking at cost of living measures. We’ve put forward an €11 billion budget, precisely to help people through this Cost of Living Crisis. What we don’t want to do is be announcing funding allocations as Minister Humphries is doing on the one hand, and then we have, an unintended consequence, that happened a few weeks later after the budget, in relationship to the TII’s announcement around the tolls going up”.
