Labour Party to propose The Land Bill
The Labour Party’s proposing new legislation which it says could knock tens of thousands of euro off house prices.
The Land Bill is based off a recommendation from the 1973 Kenny Report, which suggested capping the price of land to make housing more affordable.
Local authorities would be able to compulsory purchase land at agricultural values, plus 25% under the proposal.
Labour Party housing spokesperson, Senator Rebecca Moynihan, hopes the government will get behind the bill.
“I really hope that the government work with this and engage with this and actually work with us to bring down the cost of providing housing.
“I hope that they don’t vote this down, this is a central part of bringing down the cost of housing because land costs are a significant contributor to the high cost of housing.”
