Last American troops depart Afghanistan

The last American troops and diplomats have been flown out of Kabul airport, almost 20 years after it invaded the country.

It marks the end of a chaotic withdrawal which has seen the biggest air evacuation in history.

More than 120,000 people have been flown out of Afghanistan since the Taliban takeover.

The United Nations says future evacuees must be given free passage.

US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken believes between one-and two-hundred US citizens are still there.

“We will hold the Taliban to its pledge to let people freely depart Afghanistan.

“The Taliban has committed to let anyone with proper documents to leave the country in a safe and orderly manner – they have said this privately and publicly many times.”
