Leo Varadkar believes energy supplies will not be rationed

The Tánaiste doesn’t believe the rationing of energy supplies will happen here.

It follows remarks from the EU Commissioner Mairead McGuiness, who warned rationing ‘could be a reality’ this winter.

EU members could be left without fuel supplies as lawmakers look to reduce their dependence on Russian oil.

However Leo Varadkar doesn’t think it will happen here, saying Ireland does have energy reserves:

“That would only rise I think, where attempts were made to price controls and they never work. When you bring in price caps, you either have to increase them all the time, which defeats the whole purpose, or you end up rationing energy because there’s a limit on supply, because the people who bring the fuel into the country just can’t bring it in at the cost you have capped it at.”
