Murder investigation underway following death of teacher in Offaly

A man in his 40s remains in custody this morning in connection with the murder of a young teacher in Co. Offaly.

The 22-year-old, named locally as Ashling Murphy, was attacked in Tullamore yesterday afternoon.

An area along the Grand Canal remained sealed off in the town overnight following the attack on the 22-year-old school teacher.

Its believed the woman, Ashling Murphy, was exercising along the canal between Boland’s Lock and Digby Bridge when she was attacked.

A man in his 40s has been arrested, and remains in custody at Tullamore Garda station this morning.

Gardaí believe it was a random attack and do not believe the victim and the man in custody knew each other.

Gardaí are appealing for anyone with any information to contact them.

In particular, Gardaí are appealing to anyone who was in the Cappincur/Canal walk area of Tullamore before 4pm yesterday to contact them at Tullamore Garda Station.
