Nine Irish Soldiers Killed In Niemba Ambush In Congo To Be Remembered Today

Nine Irish soldiers killed in the Niemba Ambush in the Congo, will be remembered in Dublin today.

The soldiers were serving in a UN peacekeeping force in the central African state.

A mass will be held in Cathal Brugha Barracks at 12pm, followed by a wreath-laying ceremony.

Cormac Kirwan of Óglaigh Náisiúnta na hÉireann says it was the biggest loss of Irish life overseas representing the Defence Forces:

“It’s a significant event because it’s an opportunity for the families and relatives of the fallen to attend, and it’s also recognition by both those that are serving and veteran communities. It’s a very sombre event and it’s really important in our particular calendar, because one of our primary objectives would be in the whole area of remembrance”.
