Over 1,000 children treated in hospital for drugs or alcohol related issues in 2021

Nearly 1,100 children were treated in hospital for drug or alcohol-related issues last year.

According to freedom of information figures, 79% were girls.

The statistics relate to inpatient admissions, so don't include attendances at emergency departments only.

GP Garrett McGovern specialises in addiction medicine and says some cases can be fatal:

"If someone is admitted into hospital for an overdose, it depends on the severity of the overdose. Some people don't come out of those overdoses. It's unfortunate the repercussions and by the time that the ambulance crew get to them and provide emergency care is too late and unfortunately, they usually there's usually a lack of oxygen for a period of time and they don't make it."
