Over one in every five people who attended Sexual Assault Treatment Units last year, were less than 18 years old.

In total, 859 patients went to the units in 2021 after being attacked, and 185 were children.

24 were less than 14 years old, while seven were over the age of 70.

Cliona Sadlier, from the Rape Crisis Network Ireland, says age is no barrier when it comes to sex crimes:

"We've always known about sexual violence. There's no discrimination in terms of age and you remain vulnerable throughout your life. And yes, we do meet older people, and significantly, you know, LGBT people who have just recently been sexually assaulted."
