President Michael D Higgins is to travel to Cork later this month for a commemoration ceremony marking the centenary of a War of Independence ambush in East Cork

The President will attend the event and unveil a monument at the site of the Clonmult Ambush near Midleton, where 12 IRA men were killed and two were later sentenced to death by British forces on February 20th, 1921.

The ambush nearly wiped out the entire East Cork flying column.

Organisers say the ceremony, which will take place on February 20th at 1.30pm, will see people travel from the US, the UK and all across Ireland to attend the event.
