Proposed ‘sex for rent’ sentences may be too severe, says Department of Justice
A seven-year prison sentence for requesting ‘sex for rent’ may be too severe, according to the Department of Justice.
It will express ‘concern’ at the plan today, when the bill’s discussed at the Oireachtas justice committee.
It’ll suggest the punishment should be in line with the crime of ‘purchasing sexual services’.
Fine Gael’s justice spokesman in the Seanad, Barry Ward, also says a maximum sentence of five years may be appropriate.
“I can see the merit behind the argument, and I will raise it with them today.
“It should be around the same range, because when a judge is deciding on a sentence, he or she will look at the full range, i.e. from zero to the maximum sentence.
“Where that’s two years more for the purchase of sexual services, there is perhaps an inconsistency in terms of the approach the court might make to this kind of offending behaviour.”
