Ronaldo on target as United move into Champions League places

Cristiano Ronaldo ended a run of six games without a goal in Manchester United’s 2-nil Premier League win over Brighton.

He opened the scoring to help move the Old Trafford side back into the Champions League places.

Interim boss Ralf Rangnick says it was an impressive display from the Portugal captain.

He was online, he was always trying to help the other the teammates. So I think in the last weeks it was definitely the best performance by him and, yeah, a very, very important goal for us.

“We still have quite a few games to play, obviously after the last three games with three draws, two of them at home and in all three games being 1-0 up.
“This was a very important win.”

Manchester City hammered Sporting Lisbon 5-0 in the first-leg of their Champions League last-16 tie in Portugal last night.

Bernardo Silva scored twice, while Riyad Mahrez, Phil Foden and Raheem Sterling were also on the mark for Pep Guardiola’s side.

Despite the impressive scoreline, Guardiola feels there are areas to be looked at.

“Yeah, we defend well and we we got an incredible, incredible result.

“But we had the duty as a manager as a team to analyse exactly how we perform individually collectively, not just the result. The result is a dream. But performance – we can do better.”

Elsewhere, Kylian Mbappé scored an incredible injury-time winner as PSG beat Real Madrid 1-0 in Paris.

That was after Lionel Messi failed to put away a penalty after an hour.

Tonight, Liverpool are away to Inter Milan in the first leg of their last 16 encounter.

Speaking ahead of the game, Trent Alexander-Arnold says they will compete for success in multiple competitions this season.

As well as being in contention for the the Champions League and FA Cup, they’re second in the Premier League and in the final of the EFL Cup.

The defender says the squad has enough quality to challenge on all four fronts.

“The seasons when we when we when we won the Champions League we almost won the league.

So we’ve been abl eto show, we’ve shown ourselves and shown people that we are able to to compete on multiple fronts.

“But yeah to have a place in all four competition still at this point this season is good for us.”

Kick-off at the San Siro is at 8-o’clock.

While at the same time Austria’s RB Salzburg host 2020 champions Bayern Munich.
