RSA urge drivers and pedestrians to take care on the roads this evening
The RSA are urging drivers and pedestrians in Cork to take care on the roads this evening.
It comes as a status yellow ice warning is in place around the country and will come into effect at 6 O’clock this evening.
The Road Safety Authority says the change in weather will come as a surprise to people after such a mild few weeks and that road users should exercise caution while the weather warning is in place.
Speaking to RedFM News, Brian Farrell from the RSA says emergency departments in hospitals see an increase in accidents during icy weather:
“We had the extreme weather back in 2010. And talking to some consultants in Cork University Hospital they saw a tenfold increase in the number of people presenting to the emergency department with fractures as a result of slips on the ice. So at this time of year when we get conditions like this, especially after a long dry spell as I mentioned it can lull us into a false sense of security and we can get caught out.”
