Samaritans says its helpline volunteers answered a call for help every 56 seconds last year.

In its latest Impact Report, the charity says volunteers took more than 560 thousand calls and emails in 2020.

While the charity said callers' concerns were the same compared to pre-pandemic, it found calls to its helpline were longer.

Rory Fitzgerald, Regional Director of Samaritans Ireland, says people didn't have their usual outlets to turn to.

"The issues they had, they needed more times to talk about them because they were being magnified by lockdown and everything else that was going on.

"People didn't have the natural release in their life like sport, or hobbies or interests, because these were taken way form them basically because of the situation they were in.

"So there was no release from life's pressures."
