The chief executive of the Scottish National Party has resigned with immediate effect.

Peter Murrell who is married to Nicola Sturgeon, is accused of undermining the ongoing leadership contest.

The party initially denied reports that it had lost 30,000 members in a year – but it turned out to be true.
