The government has been accused of watching people falling further into debt and poverty before deciding to take any action.

The Social Democrats hit out at the a 'lack of urgency' to provide financial assistance for families struggling as the cost of living continues to rise.

Ministers yesterday announced a €6.7bn package for Budget 2023 - it will take place on September 27th - two weeks early.

Of that money there will be €2.3bn in unallocated spending which will have to accommodate any new public sector pay deal.

Co-leader of the Social Democrats Roisin Shortall said many families cannot wait until September they need help immediately.

"It certainly is too late. The point is that people are struggling now and need help now.

"The Government essentially accepted that.

"There is a need for a special allocation, not just the regular budget, but they're not doing that until September - people need the help now."
