Study shows 91% of travellers feel disrespected by Gardai

The Equality Minister says the findings of a report into Travellers’ relationship with the criminal justice system are ‘stark’.

The large scale study carried out by the University of Limerick also found many felt ‘racially profiled’ by members of Gardaí,

91 per cent of the Travellers surveyed feel disrespected by Gardai, with some saying their worst encounters were when they were stopped and searched.

Roderic O’Gorman says the disparity between Travellers and settled peoples’ trust in Gardaí is of particular concern.

“I think that particular contrast in terms of 70% of the settled community, feeling trust in the Gardai and 80% of travellers not feeling trust, I think that’s that’s a really stark contrast and and it’s very unsettling.

“Everybody should feel confidence in our police force.”
