Taoiseach says Red Cross must move quicker to house refugees

The Taoiseach is urging the Irish Red Cross to move quicker in securing homes for Ukrainian refugees.

Micheál Martin held talks with the organisation yesterday, where he asked them to ‘accelerate’ the process.

25,000 accommodation pledges were made – but around 16% were withdrawn.

Fine Gael senator Barry Ward says holiday homes are an ‘untapped resource’ in the humanitarian crisis.

“The CSO estimates that there are around 60,000 holidays homes that are not in use at the moment.

“Even if 10% of those could be harnessed, and working not he basis that the average household is 3 people, that’s 18,000 that could be accommodated through that straight away, and that’s only 10% of the capacity that’s there

“I think it’s absolutely realistic, and it’s important that it happens.”
