TD calls for availability of ‘laughing gas’ to be restricted
The easy availability of nitrous oxide, or “laughing gas”, needs to be tackled according to a TD, as the numbers using it to get high increases.
Recent figures from the EU drugs agency show almost 1 in 4 people in Ireland said they’d used the gas at some stage in their lives.
It’s normally used in the catering industry or by dentists but inhaling it can cause damage to the nervous system.
Sinn Féin TD and former addiction counsellor, Mark Ward, says the rules around nitrous oxide need to be tightened;
“You can potency over the internet without any controls and checks that are used commercially indicate rules for anybody to be able to go unfortunately over the internet. There’s also unscrupulous people around the areas who are selling them to younger people matter prosperous as well.”
