The Government is set to establish a new agency aimed at tackling domestic, sexual and gender-based violence

The body would oversee the delivery of services to victims, offer support and co-ordinate government action.

It follows a report by Tusla which has highlighted gaps in the availability of refuge spaces in parts of the country.

Sarah Benson, CEO of Women’s Aid, says it’s important to have a joined-up approach:

“We have a shortfall of refuge spaces, but refuge is not the only solution. It’s no good women and children fleeing for refuge if they have no option for them to face in some cases, having to go back to a dangerous home, because we need accommodation for domestic violence victims to be put in the context of the Housing and Homeless strategy and not isolated.”
