The head of the Irish Medical Organisation says no medical professional or HSE official should be surprised with what happened in South Kerry CAMHS

The group told an Oireachtas Mental Health Committee today that years of underfunding and poor recruitment policies has had devastating effects on care.

CEO Susan Clyne says the mistreatment of patients in South Kerry was a result of a wider problem:

“I don’t think anybody in the in the profession is surprised as what has happened in CAMHs, and nor should anybody in the HSE have been surprised or in the Department of Health. It is absolutely a system failure. And the rush to doing the orders to finding somebody to blame to holding a person accountable is not going to address that system failure.”
